ABOUT SKIN-TO-SKIN

Why Kangaroo Mother Care matters — and why it’s hard to achieve

Skin-to-skin care is one of the most effective, low-cost interventions for premature infants. It improves survival rates, stabilizes vital signs, supports brain development, and strengthens the parent–infant bond.*

Yet many NICUs find it difficult to meet the recommended hours of KMC. The reasons are often practical: staff shortage and work burden, lack of experience, risk and complexity, and fear of destabilizing fragile infants during transfers.

CareFold® Solution helps bridge this gap by giving nurses and doctors a simple, control-integrated tool that makes skin-to-skin care easy to provide — every day, for every family.

“We used CareFold in connection with the INSURE method*, and the infant was well supported with the sides raised. After the procedure, it was gentle to lift the infant directly over to the mother’s bed by a single nurse while continuing CPAP treatment. The infant was GA 33 and only a few hours old, so the mother was bedridden and unable to lift the infant herself.“

“A boy was placed on CareFold prior to transfer from one incubator to another by a single nurse. It worked very well - he did not notice that he was being moved. After the move, an X-ray was taken inside the incubator while he was lying on CareFold, which was much more gentle for him. This was carried out in accordance to a prior agreement with the physician. The X-ray images were used to verify the placement of the tube and long line and were satisfactory.”

“An intubated infant born at GA 25 was been transferred on CareFold multiple times. The transfers worked well and safely, with secure fixation of the tubes. The infant was well swaddled and therefore did not react to the transfer itself. It works well. The parents were able to spend calm moments smelling and kissing their baby after the infant was placed on the mother’s chest (Skin-to-Skin).”
